CHANGE YOUR FUTURE BY ACCEPTING THE PRESENT
1ST MEETING FROM 11TH JANUARY TO 15TH JANUARY RAVNE NA KOROŠKEM Of KARLOVAČKA GIMNAZIJA SREMSKI KARLOVCI - SERBIA GIMNAZIJA BANSKA BYSTRICA - SLOVAKIA GIMNAZIJA RAVNE NA KOROŠKEM – SLOVENIA
Salzburg, Austria 28th September to 2nd of October 2009St. Virgil Education and Conference Centre in Salzburg, Austria My English language teacher, Milena Forštner, who is the coordinator of the ACES project “CHANGE THE FUTURE BY ACCEPTING THE PRESENT”, and I went to Salzburg by train on Monday morning at about 5 o'clock to attend a five day event, called “ACES KICK–OFF MEETING” that was going on in St. Virgil Education and Conference Centre in Salzburg, Austria from 28th September to 2nd of October 2009. We arrived in Salzburg in the early afternoon. Already on the first day we did some sightseeing in the wonderful Mozart town. The beauty of the town impressed me, though I could not say the same for the prices. At 6 o'clock we had an unofficial opening of the conference and after that we had dinner. After dinner I met our partners of the project who are the Slovaks and the Serbians. Already on the first evening we pulled down the barriers and we started communicating with each other. Tuesday was the official opening of the conference which was organised by the representatives of the ACES (Academy of Central European Schools) coordinated by the Interkulturelles Zentrum and initiated by ERSTE Foundation and under the patronage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. The conference was attended approximately by 250 students and their teachers from 15 countries from the central Europe. Although the official working language was English, national mother tongues were heard all the time. It was interesting to listen to so many different languages and to speak with almost everybody, using either English, German, Slovenian or other languages. Despite the fact that there were 17 other Slovenian students with their teachers, I was the one who presented our country in a short presentation. We spent the rest of the day in three groups working in a simulation named “A park is born”. The goal of the game was to see how a community can influence the politicians and the authorities to improve the situation. I had great fun participating in this simulation game and I met lots of nice people who I spent some unforgettable moments with.In the evening we had some interviews for Serbian and Slovenian TV. On Wednesday morning we, together with our partners, planned the details of our project while our students here, at Gimnazija Ravne na Koroškem, who are also involved in the project, together with the co-mentor of the project, Mojca Krebs, participated their share to the task we had to carry out with joined forces. They were extremely good at fulfilling their job and together we created an extremely nice presentation of our part of the project.Wednesday was a great day as we had the whole afternoon free just for ourselves. So, my teacher and I went to do some sightseeing in Salzburg. We went to the fortress and it was amazing. Then we went to the Europark but I did not buy anything there, because it was too expensive. At 9 o'clock in the evening we had a Slovenian meeting. There were 36 Slovenians participating in the gathering. We had a great time together playing some games. On Thursday we had workshops all the day round. The workshop I attended in the morning was not very interesting, but the one I attended in the afternoon, which was called “Man I feel like a woman”, was very interesting. On Thursday evening all the participants shared their national specialities with the others. It was very picturesque and of course very tasty. The evening ended with a disco party, which ended very late in the night. I made friendship with a lot of participants.Friday morning was the day to say good-bye to everybody. As all nice things end too quickly, also this meeting ended very quickly. After the official closure of the event, we said goodbye to our new friends and promised to each other to be in contact via e-mails.According to the departure time, the participants were sent to different places to see how different projects are dealt with in various schools in Salzburg. As we were leaving early in the afternoon, we were offered to attend a workshop at the Educational centre. It was about racism, discrimination and prejudices against those who are of different background. The workshop was carried out by two teenage girls from Salzburg. It is interesting that in Austria already youngsters see the threat of the growing racism and they try to do their best to open other youngsters’ eyes in order to fight against the marching racism. In the afternoon, at a quarter past two, we, filled with nice experience, were on our train back home again. I must admit I am looking forward to meeting all those people again. It is for sure I will meet my partners either in Slovenia, in Slovakia or in Serbia. The final meeting of all the participants will be held in March in Slovakia. I hope to be there as well.Nejc Valcl, 2a
